The Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization (HWMO) has been contracted by the State of Hawaiʻi, Department of the Attorney General to lead a collaborative effort that is dedicated to improving Hawaiʻi’s wildfire preparedness and resilience by developing actionable state-level plans. The mandated projectʻs objectives are to develop clear, actionable plans tailored to each of the 10 priorities identified by the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI); enhance coordination and accountability across multiple agencies that contribute to Hawaiʻi’s wildfire management framework; and lay the groundwork for the future operationalization of the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

This is a state-level planning effort. Key public and private entities will be involved whose work and actions impact statewide wildfire outcomes. Phase 3 of the FSRI report advised 10 priorities at the state level, as well as the county level. State level priorities are depicted in the figure below:

10 Priorities for State Level:

This initiative presents a unique opportunity to significantly enhance wildfire readiness across Hawaiʻi. The outcomes will drive improved coordination, informed decision-making, and a clear roadmap for mitigating wildfire risks, ultimately safeguarding lives and property. The project team looks forward to engaging stakeholders in this collaborative effort.

Stakeholder Involvement - What to Expect:

For stakeholders involved in the process, please expect to participate in interviews, draft planning goals and actions specific to your entity, and attend collaborative learning, coordinating, and planning workshops/sessions per topical priority, as relevant and requested. The workflow for stakeholder participation is depicted in the figure below:
